French Drain for Outdoor Shower: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a French drain is a highly effective solution for managing and draining water from your outdoor shower. French drains are perforated pipes encased in gravel, designed to capture and redirect water away from the area. This prevents pooling and waterlogging, improving the durability and safety of your outdoor showering space.

Materials Required

  • Perforated 4-inch PVC pipe
  • Gravel (3/4-inch washed gravel or pea gravel)
  • Landscape fabric
  • Dry well or pop-up emitter
  • Shovel
  • Measuring tape
  • Level

Step 1: Determine the Slope and Layout

Establish the desired slope of the drain, typically around 1/4 inch per foot, ensuring water flows efficiently. Measure and mark the location of the drain line from the shower drain to the discharge point or dry well.

Step 2: Dig the Trench

Excavate a trench along the planned route, ensuring it's deep enough to accommodate the pipe and gravel. The width of the trench should be approximately 12-18 inches, allowing enough space for the gravel layer.

Step 3: Lay the Landscape Fabric

Line the bottom and sides of the trench with landscape fabric. This fabric helps prevent soil and debris from clogging the drain system.

Step 4: Install the Perforated Pipe

Place the perforated PVC pipe in the center of the trench, maintaining the desired slope. Use a level to ensure the pipe is properly graded.

Step 5: Add the Gravel

Fill the trench around the pipe with washed gravel. The gravel provides a pathway for water to flow into the pipe while preventing dirt from clogging it. Compact the gravel to stabilize the pipe.

Step 6: Connect to the Shower Drain

Connect the perforated pipe to the drainpipe from the outdoor shower. Use a coupling or adapter to ensure a secure connection.

Step 7: Install the Discharge Point

At the end of the drain line, install a dry well or pop-up emitter. A dry well is a perforated container that allows water to gradually infiltrate the surrounding soil. A pop-up emitter is a device that releases water above ground, typically into a rain garden or dry creek bed.

Maintenance

Periodically check the drain line for any blockages or damage. Remove any debris that may have accumulated over time. Inspect the gravel layer and replenish it if it has settled or become displaced.
